The Fisher House program is a unique private-public partnership, supporting America's military, in their time of need. The program recognizes the special sacrifices, of our men and women, in uniform, and the hardships, of military service, by meeting a humanitarian need beyond what is normally provided by the Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs.
Zachary Fisher, founder of the Fisher House Foundation, was recently named, to the Philanthropy Hall of Fame (February 2013), in honor of his tireless work to support our military. "Zachary Fisher never sought any special recognition for his work on behalf of American service men and women. The work was its own reward. Six months after his death, though, Fisher was honored with a new law that conferred upon him the honorary status of Veteran of the Armed Forces of the United States." Philanthropy Roundtable
“It’s a privilege to live in this great country of ours,” Fisher said in an interview late in life. “I owe them.” Ken Fisher, Zachary's great-nephew, continues the legacy, by leading the Foundation, for a new generation of Veterans.
As citizens of Georgia, it’s great when we can gather together in support of our local community. The Charlie Norwood VAMC Fisher House, located in Augusta, GA, is not only a safe haven, for active duty and veteran’s families, when someone they love, faces long-term rehabilitation. It also provides tertiary care, treating injured service members, and, Veterans throughout the Southeast.
Fisher House Augusta relies, on donations, from individuals and groups, to support its programs. And, 100%, of donated funds, are used to provide cooking supplies, bus passes, phone cards and personal items that family members use during their stay.
